Now that we explained pros and cons os the solar sector, just to know what to expect, we can now think about investing. Let's talk about the most interesting companies I've seen in this sector. GT Solar (SOLR) and First Solar Inc (FSLR).
SOLR is a global provider of polysilicon production technology, crystalline ingot growth systems and related photovoltaic manufacturing services for the solar industry. Company show some impressive fundamentals increase over the last years, 2008 revenues just double those of 2007, and while 2009 these remain stucked, in 2010 increased another 40 % (this means 260% increase in only 4 years), as for profits, the same tendency, in the same 4 years, +400% increase. Moreover, increasing margins, and showing ROE renges between 40 and 105. P/E 11. Main con ? In 2010 increased a lot its debt. Hower its debt level is not high at all. But SOLR is more than just a solar company, it has entered into other lucrative specialty spaces such as the LED market, and this is precisely what i like of it, and why I think his future can be as brilliant as the recent past.
FSLR Manufactures and sells solar modules with an advanced thin film semiconductor technology, and it designs, constructs and sells photovoltaic (PV) solar power systems. FSLR shown even slightly better fundamentals, with the same upward trend in revenues an profits, showing 400% improving in revenues and 350% in profits over the last 4 year period, and most important showing improvement every single year. ROEs are lower but in their twenties every year, as for margins they are stuck. On the other hand has cash enough to pay its total liabilities. P/E 17.
What about its stock behaviour? As all solar related they both live a boom during 2007-2008, since then while SOLR has behaved like the general market, living a great 2011, and being now at its IPO start price back in 2008. As for FSLR remain trading in the 2009 lows range.
For me its stocks seem to be still paying for the 2007 party, like any tech company in the middle 2000s. I consider them both winning horses, but as said in previous post we must keep an eye on sector evolution. SOLR breaking 16 is a must hold stock as investment play, and we should keep following FSLR looking for some strenght in prices.
